Nero BurnRights

Posted by Thary on August 7, 2007

I learn that a reguar user account, an account that is a member of Users group in Windows XP or Windows 2000, can not use Nero or Nero Express to create files on a CD. The user is restricted to only write an image file to a hard disk.

I have a Lite-On DVDRW LDW-451S and Nero fully supports it, but after I install Nero Express, I can only create an image file to my hard disk. Every time I try to create a CD, it fails. Looking up on Nero’s website, I find that Nero actually offers a tool called Nero BurnRights that removes restrictions and allows a limited user to write files to a CD.

Nero offers this tool for free to Nero’s users. So I download the tool and install it on my Windows XP Professional machine. I need to login using a local administrator to my machine, though, to install Nero BurnRights. When the installation completes, NeroBurnRights prompts me with three options for which I can choose to allow ‘burn’ rights.

The three options are:

  • Administrators – Only administrators can use Nero and write CDs.
  • Everyone – Everyone on my computer can use Nero and write CDs.
  • Nero group – Nero BurnRights creates a new group named Nero and only user(s) in this group can use Nero and write CDs.

Out of the three options, I choose Everyone, which enables whoever logs on to my computer to use Nero to write CDs. This choice works best for me because I always run my computer with the least privileged user account. If I choose Nero group, I need to deal with adding my user account and others to this group so that everyone is allowed to use Nero and write CDs. I try to avoid as much hassle as possible. So “everyone” selection is a good choice.

Now I can use my Lite-On DVDRW LDW-451S to create both image files, CDs and DVDs. Thanks Nero that provides such tool and still keeps my computer run in a secure mode.

CDBurnerXP Pro 3 Errors with a limited user account

Posted by Thary on August 5, 2007

CDBurnerXP Pro is a free CD/DVD burning software. CDBurnerXP Pro supports writing CD-R, CDRW, DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW discs. The program can be downloaded from http://www.cdburnerxp.se/ website. The program provides easy installation and user-friendly interfaces.

When I run CDBurnerXP Pro 3 with a limited user account in Windows XP, I am getting two errors.

1). The program won’t detect my CD or DVD writer when I am launching “Create a new data CD/RW, data DVD/RW” option on the program menu;

2). I get “ocx” file errors when I am launching “Create a new audio CD, with or without gaps between tracks” option on the program menu.

Resolutions

With my work-around, I am able to resolve these problems. See steps below:

1). Fix “The program does not detect Ir CD writer or DVD writer” error

I solve this problem by enabling “Restrict CD-ROM access to locally logged-on user only” option in the “Local Security Policy”. I set this policy by using the local security policy editor in the “Administrative Tools” in Control Panel.

Note: I must login as a local administrator to run this tool.

1) Open Local Security Policy from Administrative Tools in Control Panel.

2) Expand Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Local Policies\Security Options

3) Double-click “Devices: Restrict CD-ROM access to locally logged-on user only” in the right pane

4) Select “Enabled” and close the “Local Security Policy” and reboot the computer.

2). Fix OCX file errors

The “ocx” errors occur only when I am running “Create a new audio CD, with or without gaps between tracks” option. I fix these errors by copy all “ocx” from the program installed location and place them inside “C:\Windows\System32″. After I place them inside System32, I register these files so that the Windows recognize them.

1) Open “C:\Program Files\CDBurnerXP Pro 3″ folder.

2) Find and copy the following files and paste them in %systemroot%\system32 folder.

  • digibuttons.ocx, digimetres.ocx, digislider.ocx, digitexts.ocx, digitimer.ocx, filevw52.ocx, fldrvw52.ocx

3) Open a command prompt and register each file

  • regsvr32 digibuttons.ocx
  • regsvr32 digimetres.ocx
  • regsvr32 digislider.ocx
  • regsvr32 digitexts.ocx
  • regsvr32 digitimer.ocx
  • regsvr32 filevw52.ocx
  • regsvr32 fldrvw52.ocx

I get same errors when I run CDBurnerXP Pro 3 with a limited user account in Windows 2000 Professional. With this resolution, I am able to fix errors both in Windows XP and Windows 2000 Professional.

Error Code 37: CD-ROM or DVD-ROM No Longer Accessible, It’s gone…

Posted by Thary on July 28, 2007

Suddenly my CD/DVD drive disappears. This happens after I remove Roxio Easy CD Creator or DirectCD from my workstation that is running Microsoft Windows XP Professional. However, Windows XP does not seem to cause this problem.

Viewing Device Manager, I see a yellow exclamation mark before the CD-ROM device. Inside the property of the CD-ROM, and under Device status, I see a Windows  error code 37, which states “Windows can not initialize the device driver for this hardware.” Viewing Driver tab, Windows is telling that the device driver is installed properly.

What is actually causing my CD-ROM drive to disappear from my system? To my understanding, the actual cause lies at when I remove Roxio Easy CD Creator. When I first install this application, Roxio filters and records my CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive information in the registry under two entries: UpperFilters and LowerFilters. And, when I uninstall the Roxio software, the records are not cleared from LowerFilters and UpperFilters, which I think causes CD-ROM drive to disapear from my Windows XP workstation.

In order for me to bring my CD-ROM or DVD-ROM back in the system, I need to remove LowerFilters and UperFlters, from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
. I need to restart my computer after I remove these entries so Windows XP has fresh information about the device.

After reboot, and browse My Computer, there it is my CD/DVD-ROM drive appears again. Then I google ”error code 37″, I found a few other related links with different error codes. For a future reference, I post those links here.

I further notice that when this problem occurs, it applies to all internal or external CD-ROMs or DVD-ROMs that are connected to the computer, which causes the drives to disappear. But, removing LowerFilters and UpperFilters from the registry resolves this problem.
