Group Policy Settings vs. Registry Entries

Posted by Thary on October 30, 2009

In the Microsoft Windows operating system, when you make settings in the group policy (gpedit.msc), the settings will also create registry entries in the registry database.

The table below tells you where to look for the key when the settings in the group policy are applied.

Group Policy Settings Registry Entries
Computer Configuration HKLM\Software\Policies, Or

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies

User Configuration HKCU\Software\Policies, Or

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies

For example:

In the local group policy editor, when you enable “Lock the Taskbar” setting under User Configuration\Administrative Template\Start Menu and Taskbar, you also create a registry entry referenced to “Lock the Taskbar” in HKCU\\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer].

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USERS\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"LockTaskbar"=dword:00000001

This value 1 means “LockTaskbar” is enabled, while the value 0 means “LockTaskbar” is disabled.  You can either enable or disable “Lock the Taskbar” group policy setting by just changing the value of the “LockTaskbar” registry entry.

Installing and sharing Windows XP help content

Posted by Thary on October 30, 2009

In Windows XP Professional, you can install and share help content from another Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Home Edition, and related Windows server operating systems.

After you install the new help content, you can switch back and forth between the help content at anytime, or share it with other computers on your network.

Note:

Installing and sharing help content is only available for Windows XP and related Windows server operating systems. You can not install and share help content on a computer running Windows 2000.

In order to install help content into Windows XP Professional from Windows XP Home Edition, you will need a CD-ROM that contains Windows XP Home Edition or another computer that is running Windows XP Home Edition.

To install Windows XP Home help content, follow these steps:

  1. On a computer running Windows XP professional, click Start and choose Help and Support.
  2. Insert a CD-ROM that contains Windows XP Home Edition into the CD-ROM drive.
  3. On the menu bar of the Help and Support Center, click Options.
  4. Under Options on the right, click Install and share Windows Help.
  5. On the Install and share Windows Help page, choose Install help content from a CD or disk image.
  6. On the Install Help from disk page, enter the location or a CD-ROM drive letter, or choose Browse to locate the help content.
  7. Click Find to look for help content on the CD.
  8. Pick a version of help content from the list, in this case, Windows XP Home Edition, and click Install.

To start using the newly installed help content, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start and choose Help and Support.
  2. Click Options and under Options, choose Install and share Windows Help.
  3. On the Install and share Windows Help page, choose Switch from one operating system’s help content to another.
  4. On the Switch Help version page, there should be two help versions on the list as follows.
    • Windows XP Professional
    • Windows XP Home Edition
  5. To start using the help content, select a version of help content from the list, and click Switch.

By integrating help content from one operating system into another operating system, for example, Windows XP Home edition into Windows XP Professional, you can learn and find help about that Windows XP Home quickly and easily without having to actually installing it.

How much memory can you install in Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop?

Posted by Thary on October 29, 2009

You can install up to 2 Gigabyte (GB) of DDR2 memory in a Dell Inspiron 6000 notebook.  The Inspiron 6000 laptop uses a Mobile Intel 915GM Express Chipset.  It has 2 memory slots with maximum support of 2 GB of memory.  It comes pre-installed with 512 Megabytes (MB) of memory — 256 MB is installed in each slot.  These pre-installed memory modules are removable to allow upgrade.

The Inspiron 6000 uses DDR2 memory technology which supports DDR2 PC2-5300, DDR2 PC2-4200 and DDR2 PC2-3200 speeds.  Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-5300, DDR2 PC2-4200 and DDR2 PC2-3200 with a maximum of 1 GB per slot.  So, to upgrade the Inspiron 6000 memory up to 2 GB, you need to buy 2 non-ECC modules of 1 GB or 2 non-ECC modules of 2 GB.  You don’t have to install the memory in pairs.

Here is how to install the memory in each slot:

Slot 1 Slot 2 Total
1 GB 1 GB 2 GB
2 GB 2 GB 2 GB
1 GB 2 GB 2 GB
2 GB 1 GB 2 GB

Note:  During boot up, the system warns about a new amount of the total system memory.  Press F1 to continue or F2 to go into the setup.  So, press F2 to go into the setup.

What if you try to install 2 GB in each slot or 2 GB in one slot and 1 GB in another slot?  The system only recognizes a maximum of 2 GB, so whatever over the limit is ignored.  This is the limitation of the chipset in the computer.  You can not change this limitation unless you replace the chipset.  Does it sound like changing a motherboard?

In conclusion, Dell Inspiron 6000 only supports a total of 2 GB memory, using DDR2 memory technology with DDR2 PC2-5300, DDR2 PC2-4200 and DDR2 PC2-3200 speeds.  It does not matter how much you try to exceed the limit, the chipset only reads 2 GB of memory present.
